Buchanan County has a rich heritage of military service to our country beginning with the Civil War. Veteran organizations in several locales have erected attractive and informative monuments to honor the men and women from all wars and all branches of service.
Freedom Rock of Buchanan County
The Buchanan County Freedom Rock features Harry Ervin Yarnell, the USS Harry E. Yarnell, and Captain Daniel S. Lee. Admiral Harry Yarnell was born in Independence in 1875 and had a 51 year military career. Captain Lee led Union soldiers from Buchanan County in the U.S. Civil War. The rock also depicts the 1944 CASE SI Tractor with Hough Loader - Army Airborne because it served an important role in military history. |
