Jesup - The Right Place for a Change of Pace
Jesup, the second largest town in Buchanan County, is located on Historic Highway 20 on the western edge of the county. The route passes along the south edge of town before it veers north through town to connect with Independence Ave. (CR-D20) leading to Waterloo. The Dairy-Kone, a family owned ice cream shop & cafe that exudes the feel of earlier days, is located on the north side of the road and is a must-stop. The creamy cones are among the best in the region. As you head north through town, a turn heading east on Church Street will take you to the Parker Muncey Pioneer Park. This lovely spot provides a shelter house for picnicking, a trail, and a 6-hole disc golf course. Continuing north, the route passes the Jesup Community School campus that is home to a restored one-room schoolhouse and natural prairie area complete with walking trails. It also takes you to the Jesup Golf & Country Club where the public is welcome to play the 9-hole golf course and have a supper club style meal at the Nine & Dine restaurant. The annual Jesup Farmers Day Celebration features over 100 hours of free entertainments. The three day event includes a midway, Lumber Jack shows, musical groups, a variety of entertainment in the covered pavillion, and annually-selected special exhibits. It is a fun-filled event that out-of-towners will enjoy as much as the local folks! Jesup Lions Club is an active and well-supported organization within the community. They host a number of fundraising events throughout the year, including the Jesup Lion's Club Car & Bike Cruise and the Truck & Tractor Pull, both held in June. The Jesup Public Library offers a wide variety of programs open to the public. Follow them on Facebook to keep up-to-date.
