Historic Route 20 spans 3,365 miles across 12 states, including Buchanan County, Iowa. It is America's longest highway and goes from Boston, Massachusetts, to Newport, Oregon. In Iowa, it is referred to as Historic Highway 20 and passes through 35 towns in Iowa, including Winthrop, Independence, and Jesup in Buchanan County. Traversing the county from east to west, it follows what was once called the Hawkeye Highway and is now designated as County Road D-22. At Jesup, on the western edge of the county, it veers north to connect with Independence Avenue that leads into Waterloo. This curve with its curbed edges is one of the few remaining original sections of the road in the entire country. Be sure to take advantage of the photo ops, amenities and attractions along the way.
